I'm buying a new computer soon and was wondering if there was a way to get a USB cable and use it to transfer files (mp3 and saves) to the new pc?

Thanks.

Not that I know of, an easier way would be to set the jumpers on your current hard drive to slave, and put it in the new computer and drag and drop the files you want onto the new drive.

Yes you can, you will need a ` cross-over` or `File Transfer` USB cable tho.... a quick google search can find then for ya. But as DaiShan suggests, just pop the old drive into new comp as slave and transfer that way for free...... faster transfers too......

Well now that my hard drive is nearing its end (I keep getting startup errors with a message warning me to back up my files), I think I'll go back to the USB option. Looking through the bits and pieces I've picked up over the years, I see that I actually have a cross-over USB cable!

So does anyone know how the process works? I'm going to transfer saves, text, and mp3 files but not full programs. I've got one keyboard, one monitor, and two mice. Also, will there be any problems because Windows 98 uses FAT32, While Windows XP uses ntfs?

P.S. This is an IBM 75GXP, so when I've finished transferring my files I'm gonna wipe the drive and ask them to replace it.

Thanks for your help:p

How do you configure the USB ports on the systems for file transfers? Do you need a 3-party piece of software?

TIA

I think LapLink will do it over USB cables....but if you can't boot up from that first disk, then I don't know how to even access the disk without 3rd party software over USB...
