how can i use multiple IPs from internet provider w/ a 1 port router and 5 port hub

Assuming 2 IPs for purposes of simplicity:

.........modem
.............|
..........hub
......... /...\
..'puter.......router
.(IP #1).......(IP #2)
...................../.|.\
.............other computers

OK, I hope this is clear...

If you have less than 5 computers and as many ip addresses as computers, you don't need the router. (1 port for the modem, four for computers)

If you have more computers than IP addys, you need the first hub, the router, and another hub after the router in Ladi's diagram to get all connected. The setup would require another hub, but those should be cheap. 9 Bucks on the low-end on pricewatch.

By the way, Ladi, nice ASCII. 😉

im getting 2 ips from my cable company so i want to use them. thanks for clearing up how to configure it. i wasnt sure if you could put a hub before a router. someone told me i needed a both to begin with when i guess all i really need is the hub. i have the router though so might as well use it right, besides that i like the fact that it has a firewall built in so i want to still use it. wish i would have known to buy a router with more than one port, oh well you live and learn right?

thanks again for everyones help

i got a second hub and tried it like the diagram and it didnt work. my ip uses dhcp but when i go thru the router im not using dhcp. if i come out of the first hub with computer #1 and use dhcp will that work? (and then on the second port connect router then to hub then to computer 2 and 3 but have dhcp disabled ) also will my computer 2 and 3 be able to see computer 1 on my network and vice versa, or are then two seperate networks? another question real quick i am running a voodoo 3 3500 tv/agp and i have it hooked up to my cable. it is getting an ip 6.0.0.5
with the microsoft tv data adapter...does this have anything to do with anything? am i stealing my second ip from my computer 1 by having this adapter installed and recieving an ip address. or is this a diffferent type of ip address?

Thanks

Most Cable services use the MAC of the Ethernet Card as Authentication (password).

If this is the case in your system you have to clone one MAC to one Router and the second original MAC to the second Router, this way one IP will go to one Router, and second IP to the second Router.

i dont have two routers. i have a one port router and two 5 port workgroup hubs 2 pci nic cards ....all linksys. and a non linksys card. it has a setting for full and half duplex. what should i use?
