How can I turn off Maxtor Accousitic Management in Win2k?

Ok my Maxtor HD comes set on the Quiet option. However I heard that drastically reduces performance, and I would like to switch it to the Fast option. I went and downloaded the Accoustic Management software from Maxtor's site, but whne I try to change the options, I get the error msg: ntvdm.exe has generated errors.
