How can I try STALKER?

Is there a way for me to try stalker before I buy it?

I have read a lot of good reviews but also a lot of bad ones saying that it has good graphics but horrible gameplay.

I have downloaded the mp beta but I could not get it to work, the program would load but I could not actually play a game.

Find a friend who has it? There isn't a demo so there isn't much you can do (legally).
