How can I temporarily disable my DSL connection?

I like to disable Zone Alarm for intense gaming sessions but lately it has been blocking port probes like crazy so I would like some protection while gaming. Can I just disable my DSL connection while I play?

You should be able to simply physically disconnect the DSL line either at the NIC level or at the AC power level to the DSL modem. Most if not all DSL modems will kick back in once you establish the physical connection again. Of course, the recommended approach is to first power down your PC but the risk of damage is quite small so I'd say go for it. 😉

There might also be software that temporarily stops your net connection. But I've never tried any.

Go into the run box and type "winipcfg".. In that box there is a dropdown box where you can select your ethernet card. Below there are 6 boxes. Click Release all. This releases your IP address and disconnects you from the internet. To re-establish connection click on renew all. That will signal your DHCP server to send you a new IP address. This is usually the same as the last address that you had, but it could change. Hope this helps.

jblondi,

I'm afraid that will only prevent you from contacting the outside world. Your machine can still be accessed by other machines on the lan and on the internet.

Why are you disabling ZoneAlarm for gaming? Are you gaming multiplayer? If not, just rightclick on the ZoneLabs ICON in the tool-tray and choose "Block all internet activity" or equiv.

If you're playing on a LAN, go into ZoneLabs and put Internet security to High.

Far as CPU utilatge...I'm willing to bet it's Minimal.....do a benchmark three times with ZoneLabs enabled, and three times with it disabled.....bet you won't find a difference.
