while this is technically correct, a lot of providers lock their phones, or at least make them harder to let you do things like this without some sort of work around. Picked up a Sony Ericsson w810i yesterday and guess what? AT&T doesn't want me to use my own mp3's as ringtones. I guess they expect me to pay them 2-3 bucks a pop for ringtones from them, haha.
Sawyer what model is your phone and who is your carrier? I haven't come across too many phones in my time that aren't at worse un-lockable to allow you to use mp3 ring tones - given of course your phone actually supports mp3 playback.
howardforums.com is a great resource, almost too big though it's hard sometimes to find what you're looking for on there with a million messages about everything
If your have Verizon you can typically just email the ring tone to your phone, it has to be less than 30 seconds, but that method works well, if you don't have a messaging package it will cost you a quarter. But, depending on your phone actually getting it to let you use the mp3 as a ringtone can be a whole different story.
give us more info on your phone and I'm sure somebody here can help you.
