How can I shut this comp up?

Alright the sound is driving me nuts on this thing! 2 fans, a intel heatsink w/fan, WD 80 gig SE, 420 Power supply. Any non-violent way to make this thing shut up?!

OK, for real now....where are you fans located? Is it just the sound of air moving you hear? Is it a "squeaking" noise...a "grinding" noise? What noise is it?

I have 10 fans running in my comp, and its not very loud, considering.

How about info on the case and how you have the fans set up? If it's not an Enlight, we should be able to shut it up, but need more info.

That shouldn't be producing that much noise. I have a 48CFM 40dBA fan for cooling my XP2000+ along with 4 case fans (probably all ~20 to 30dBA) and a dual-fanned 350W Enermax PSU and my machine is practically quiet. Even with only the computer on and no other noise from any other appliances (usually radio or the TV is on), there just a little hum at most.

Ok guys, I can pretty much describe the rig, there are 2 fans, they both run at about 28 dB each, one is mounted on the side blowing air in and one is in the back blowing air out, a 420 watt generic power above the mobo with two fans( I can't tell if it is producing a lot of sound or not), on the Motherboard there is an Intel Heatsink and fan which is pretty loud. Also there is a Radeon 9700 pro which doesn't seem to be making much noise. The loudest part is the hard drive, it is a WD 80 SE, it is mounted below the floppy. Above it are a CD-rom which is not that loud and a CD-RW which is about as loud as the Hard Drive, these can't be silenced so there's no point. What do you guys think would be an affordable way besides pressing the power button, to shut this thing up! Sorry I can't upload some pics, I don't have a website or anything, I can send them via AIM or something like that though.

Get a quiet power supply, i.e antec or enermax. Most generic power supplies generate a lot of noise. I normally run my system with the case open then momentarily stop each fan one by one to check for a difference in noise. If one of your fans is really loud it is probabably close to failing and should be replaced with a quiet fan.

Isolate your hard drive. If you have a spare 5 1/4 bay, you can run some sort of thin elastic around in two loops, one for the front and one for the back. Essentially you want to suspend your drive in mid air. Just make sure not to move the case around too much.

There are products you can buy to do this. And if I wasn't so lazy right now I would dig up a link. This article at silentpcreview.com might be a good place to look.

Quick summary of article:

You could also do it yourself for almost nothing. Go to (of all places) a fabric store. Ask your girlfriend/wife/mother where to go. Ask for some kind of thin elastic cord. Something small enough to fit into the mounting holes on your drive cage. All you need is a foot, but might as well get a few feet, cause it'll be dead cheap.

Tie two tight loops around the mounting holes, then take the top and bottom of each loop and invert it. Stick the drive in. When you let go, the tighter loops will hold the drive securely. You just have to plug and unplug cables carefully and take it out before you move it.
