How can I scan Photo Negatives and Color Slides

My Aunt just found a box of probably 1000 photo B/W negatives (2"x3") and 35mm slides that date back from around 1933 through WWII. What would be the best way to get them into digital form that does not cause harm to them?

With so many slides I would look into finding a scanning service that can handle bulk amounts, preferably something local so the valuable slides won't have to be shipped.

My HP scanner has an attachment just for this purpose. It might be something you can buy.

My photo class had a film scanner. Was very cool..like scanning the actual print of the negative itself.

You might be better off having a professional film place doing it. I mean you can spend 1k for a good scanner and you'd probably never use it again. A pro place would know how to handle the film and would probably have prior knowledge on how to best handle really old negatives.

you can get an adapter for most newer flatbed scanners (or they come w/ them) but if you want it done right, you need a slide/neg scanner - the downside is you will spend a good deal of time doing this, and then you need to go into photoshop and clean them all up from dust and scratches
