I am running windows 2000 and have been keeping up on all the windows update notifications , but was thinking about reformating and I don't want to loose all those updates. Is there a folder the windows stores all those in so I can burn them to a disk?

Doh!

I don't have a link handy but you can go to microsoft's corporate download section to save the windows update files.

I run Win98Se, and all Windows update cabs are located at C:\Windows\Windows Update Setup Files.

Your Win2000 directory may be different, but I expect you'll find all Windows update cabs similarly filed.

Hope this helps!

This page is also awesome to bookmark for future use. Here's it's intro paragraph:
"Listed beneath are recommended updates that you should install if you have Windows XP, 2000, Millennium Edition or 98 Second Edition. Where possible linking to where the actual update can be downloaded & saved should you need to apply it at a later date, e.g. due to a re-install. This listing also covers some important OS updates which not even Windowsupdate will ever feature. Updated regularly this site will keep your Operating System up-to-date with the latest security patches & more."

Here's the link. As of now, it was last updated 2/28/02.

Hoov, your best bet really is to go back to windows update after the reinstall. The WU engine is pretty good about keeping track of what updates are installed on your machine, and determining which updates are appropriate for your machine, and going in under the covers like this might have negative side effects.

Just my personal opinon.

Hey NogginBoink,

He wouldn't be necessarily be going under the covers. He would just be downloading the updates that would normally be detected on the Windows Update website. This way, he doesn't have to get them downloaded over and over again when he needs to reinstall XP.

In this case, since he's doing a clean install, there wouldn't be a trace of what updates he's installed in the past. I've done a few, and checking the history, I can't find anything about past updates I've installed when I've had to reformat.

And, one more reason why I would do the same (download the updates and burn to a CD or something) is because lately, Windows Update has been buggy. It's referred updates that aren't even needed, like recommending an update for an Intel motherboard chipset...when the motherboard is VIA based! :D
