How can I retrieve data off of my hard drive when I'm stuck in safe mode?

I can't start windows 98se ...I get "An Exception OE has occurred at 0028:00000002 in VxD---. This was called from 0028:C145B8D5 in VxD---."

I'm stuck, I've tried so many things but I can only get it up in safe mode. My computer has a CDRW and a DVD Rom but I can't get these things to load in safe mode. I've got about 6 GB of data that I don't want to lose. I'm willing to FDisk and reload Windows 98 SE, but I don't want to lose this data. HELP!

Can you guess /determine what driver caused the VXD error? If you can, while in SAFE MODE, try to remove the driver from SYSTEM.

Did you add/update any driver before this happened?

I downloaded the lastest Windows Media Player from the MSN Update site and immediately upon restarting the computer I got the VxD message and safe mode only. I deleted the Windows Media Player but I suspect there are traces of it leftover. Is there a driver associated with Windows Media Player? Where would I find it and how is the best way to remove it?

Thanks
