Never leave home without 'em. :)

I ended up using Carbon Copy Cloner to make the Mac ones. For Win7 i just used the USB/DVD download tool.

Fundamentally, the problem is pretty simple - Apple doesn't think you need to download software you've already got installed. It's a dumb little limitation.

Holding Option usually lets you sidestep that. I think that OP is having a weird glitch.

know what your 2nd biggest mistake was?

installing Windows on a perfectly good Macbook.

know what your biggest mistake was?

deleting the recovery partition.

holding Option works on all but the newest Macs, these shipped with 10.8.

I don't think so. I think apple changed that for 10.7.

I know it doesn't work in 10.8.

I just tested this on my Retina MBP that shipped with 10.8. I was able to download the 10.7 installer from the app store by holding down option when I clicked the download button.

Well, hey, would you look at that - I'm full of crap.

I didn't even have to hold down the option key, there was just a "Download" button next to the Lion and Mountain Lion installers.

I hadn't tried it without holding down option because I just assumed it wouldn't work, so I'm full of just as much crap. :p

Don't look for OS X 'Lion' DVD. Just install OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard' from DVD which is the base, and install higher versions of OS X from Apple Store on it.

I tried it holding option, not holding option, standing on my head with one eye closed, rebooted a couple of times, updated the OS, rebooted some more,

Nothing worked.

I ended up restoring to 10.6, after that it let me download it.
