How can I remove thermal pad?

Now I'm using standard HSF, AVC brand. The temps on ASUS Probe(A7V mobo): 61C-64C.
The HSF doesn't have any thermal paste. My friend's gonna give me some.

My question is: How can I remove that thermal pad? My friend said if it's to hard, use a sandpaper and rub it off. It it right? How bout cleaning the core?

Scrape off what you can with a plastic knife, credit card, whatever. If you use something metal, be careful not to gouge or scratch the HS base. I've found Goof Off to be the most effective solvent to clean the remaining goop from the HS base and the CPU core, others use acetone, nail polish remover or alcohol. Give it a final cleaning with alcohol, then dry in preparation for the HS compound.

I used a plastic knife, then fine grade sandpaper, heatsink was smoother after also as a bonus of sanding it 🙂

Can I scrape it and clean it with nail polish remover? I don't have any alcohol/Isoprophyl.
Can I clean the remainings on the core the same way?
