If Vista is like other MS OSes, you 'might' have to install XP first and then Vista.

Not sure though...

Downgrading, eh?

Sounds like a partitioning program is in order. Partition Magic is the best, but it costs.

Anyone have a good free recommendation?

I was able to use the HD manufactures set up tools. I dowloaded maxblast III for my maxtor and Wester Digital's Data Life Gaurd Tools. They are both bootable. Just run they're set up wizard for what ever drive to want made usable for xp or vista.

If you just want to wipe the disk and install XP, just boot the XP install disc, hit F6, give it the driver for your storage controller and go from there.
