I have the following:

WD TV LIVE
Desktop Computer running XP sp3
Twonkymedia or something of that sort
Netgear router
Server (currently disconnected, could use if necessary)
Personal Laptop (Sony Vaio XP)
Business Laptop (MacBook Pro)

Heres the situation

I currently have gobs of media on my Desktop thats used at home and accessed via WD TV Live.
I travel quite a bit, sometimes with personal machine, sometimes with business machine. (if that matters) I rarely carry them both but could. What I want to be able to do is take the WDTV device with me, and somehow someway make it access the media I have at home. to play on the TV when I'm on the road. I get sick of watching on my laptops and even then don't have access to the entire library. I can access the stuff when I'm on my own network, but how do I get to it remotely. I'll get whatever I need to do it. Can anybody help? Thanks.

Adwilk,

Without going into much detail just yet, I think the only thing really limiting you from accomplishing this is they type of connection used for the WDTV while on the road.

Albeit, there are many other efficient ways to stream media (i.e. music, tv, video) while on the road (i.e. slingplayer, etc) as opposed to the WDTV but again it comes down to connection and the quality you expect to achieve?

When you refer to "on the road" will you be in hotels with DSL/WiFi or in an open area via an AirCard from a Cell Provider - Verizon, Sprint, ATT...

Personally, if you are dead set on using the WDTV, IMO easiest and most efficient way to use it is; Download all movies to Portable drive (500GB), and lug the WDTV + Drive + Cables/Power and just plug in. No need for Internet Connection

Others can chime in.

my hava does mpeg-4 at low res up to 4 megabit over wan - hook it up to the wd tv live and use your iphone to watch it.

works for my directv box.

otherwise you want a VPN or windows 7 "simple-vpn" technology or hell setup a http server on that junk and open up a port on the router

can you elaborate on this just a bit or point me in a direction to help me just a bit. I have a fairly good idea how this works, but a little steering would be helpful.

We have another application now. Our office and showroom are in separate buildings with our server in the office. We want to use some of the media in our showroom and using the WDTVLIVE would be great, since we have a couple. We keep one hooked up to a tv and a projector. It would be GREAT if we could get the media on those from our other building.

Ok, I'm still not there. I'm interested in setting up a VPN or HTTP or whatever necessary to do this. Is it possible? I'd really appreciate just some basic guidelines of what I need to do. I have no idea how to go about adjusting my router or whatever. I can probably figure it out with a little direction. Thanks.
