how can i make sure i get the better 360?

So i have $300 for a game console and I like the 360 but i want to make sure I get the better xbox.
iv heard MS has different types out and i think the falcon is the best.
how do i make sure i get the better one?
also HD is VERY important to me as well as surround sound

Well, you shouldn't have any issues with HD or surround sound. Both will work on fine on any 360 model. But if you're specifically looking for HDMI output then you need to read the features list on the box. Any model with HDMI will say so on the outside of the box.

As for the Falcon, that's tougher. I think the only sure method may be to find one that has a 175W power supply (should be listed on the box). If it has a 203W power supply it could be either one. Some people say that anything over lot #737 (some say higher than lot #734) has a much higher chance of being a Falcon and some claim that if it was produced by team "FDOU" that chances are higher for a Falcon. I haven't checked at stores myself, but all versions should be moving to the newer motherboard with HDMI output. The problem is there may still be some non-HDMI 360's at the retail level. But, AFAIK, all Falcons will have HDMI. IMO, the only way to ensure you get a Falcon is by going to the store and looking at the back of the boxes yourself. Look for the 175W power supply. If you find one, you should be good to go.

FYI I went to Bestbuy after Christmas and there are new stickers on the boxes. They don't show the team or the power supply wattage.

I won't buy from Best Buy to many bad experiences but can I buy a 360 and if its not the right one return it \ exchange it till i get the one i want do stores let you do that ?

whats the difference between core and Microsoft Xbox 360 Arcade ??? it looks like the arcade is the one in budget but i cant find cores any more...

The Core edition was the basic bundle before the Arcade came along and replaced it. The Core had whatever the Arcade has now minus the arcade games, memory card, and wireless controller (it came with a wired one).
