How can I make AVI movies into VCD's??

I got my hands on about 100 movies.. The only bad thing is that they were all burned in AVI.. and I cant watch them in my VCD player. Im thinking I need these movies to be in mpeg format so i can burn them to VCD. IS there any fast way to do this? I witnessed my friend do this once and it took him 1 freakin day to convert AVI to MPEG. Is there any other way to do this or a faster way to do it?? Any help would be greatly appreciated!..
