How can i make a self powered hub?

What if the Cat5 does have minor problems at 500ft, could he use two somehow? Like what happens when two hubs are connected by two wires...... do the packets get mirrored, or are half the packets randomly dropped?.. or am I way off? Because if I remember hubs repeat data from one port to all ports.. but I'm not sure about if it came in from two ports at once.

You should seriously consider fibre optics. A 100FX link would do great, and you can get the transcievers for either end that turns it back into 100TX for use in any hub/switch. Using a makeshift combination of cheap cable and hubs doesn't sound like a very good idea. If it works at all, it would be plagued by collisions because of the latency introduced by the repeaters. No, you can't run over any type of cable without ruining it. If you want to cross a street, there are some decent short-range omni-directional wireless solutions available.

If the wire run is too long the signals will have attenuated too much and the equipment on the other side will see it as garbage. This will result in lots of re-sends, if it even works at all. You will also have a problem with interference from almost everything possible (RF, car/lawnmower ignitions, etc).

Seriously, look into fibre. The outdoor stuff may cost a bit, but it will be worth it in the end because you won't have the problems of a long run or multiple repeaters.

Is the distance 300 meters or 600 feet? If it is 300 meters, then you are out of luck. The maximum network size for a 100BaseTX network is 200 meters. If is any longer than that, you'll need to put a switch between your two endpoints. Going to fiber is more expensive, but I can't see what you are proposing being pulled off without some major hassles.

The total length of wire segments between a PC and a hub or between two PC's cannot exceed 100 Meters (328 feet or about the length of a football field) for 100BASE-TX and 300 Meters for 10BASE-T.

sorry for the long period of no reply... but in our neborhood at the max there is only 20 cars that go thats comming and going total there are only 12 houses in our neborhood

Since most of the hubs/switches run of DC power you could (depending upon your level of experience and mechanical inclination) build a weatherproof housing for the repeater and power via a solar cell. I am not sure of the current draw of the repeater, but it couldnt be too great. A solar cell(s) of relative size might be able to keep the repeater powered via some sort of battery system for power storage for overnignt.

Just a suggestion. Solar cells are inefficient and expensive. It is worth a look at though.

If you run an extension cord THAT long, you are going to have some sort of loss over the length of the line.
