How can I locate my printer on a network?

I have a laserjet printer connected to my desktop, which is running XP Home. My wife's laptop is running Win2000 and I cannot locate this printer from her computer. The printer is shared because I print to it using my laptop running XP Home all the time. I just can't get her computer to recognize it or the network. But her computer is communicating with the wireless router just fine as she is online.

Is there a way for me to find out the URL for my printer so I can manually type it into the add printer dialog box or something?

Any suggested steps would be appreciated.

When I type \\Dell\Laserjet_2100

and got a network not found message.

How do I ping the desktop?

Thanks for taking a minute to help me out! Everytime she works at home I give this a try and have yet to make it work. As you can see my networking knowledge is limited to say the least. With my XP home laptop everythings was just kind of "there" from the start.

Download this free util. http://www.softperfect.com/download/netscan.exe

It is one Exe file notching to install. Put it on your hard drive and drag a link to a spot of you choice.

Run the proggie. In few seconds it will show you all the computers on the network, MAC addresses, pings, and which ports are opened, and Shares.

Make sure that if you have Software Firewall that all the computers are on the Trusted Zone.

Okay. First time I tried start scan it asked for a valid IP range or something so I selected auto detect IP range then then hit the bottom one because it looked more "right." Yeah, I know I'm a dumb ass!

Then the scan worked it brought up 4 IP addresses which I think correspond to

my desktop (I'm sure of this as it says the name)
router
my laptop
wife's laptop

So I did start/run with my IP address in her computer and after a few minutes it located my computer. Then I double clicked on the printer from her computer and it set it up!

Yes, finally.

Thank you so much for taking the time to help me out. I have a feeling her work computer has a software firewall and that's why I can detect it. Where would I locate the sofware firewall in Win2000?

Thanks again,

Mark

There is no built-in software firewall in Windows 2000. If there is a firewall installed it will be a third party system like Norton Internet Security, McAfee Personal Firewall, Zone Alarm, Black Ice, etc. and would be accessible either from a system tray icon or in the Start>Programs menu.
