I started this thread about Korean Food the other day.

I really really want to open my mind to enjoying this food.

There must be some way I can overcome my inhibitions.

I know it is all in my head.

What can I do ?

Any advice on adapting my pallete to appreciate foods that I don't like would be greatly appreciated !

I try that...and the next thing I know I am practically gagging trying to keep it down.

This happens with any food I have "convinced" myself tastes bad.

get REALLY REALLY hungry. it will be easier to eat that way. then its just a matter of time. once you have tried it you will get "used" to the taste, and eventually you will learn to appreciate it.

It is certainly not in your head. Stop listening to your grandma and your life will get better.
The fact is, certain type of food you will never come to like.
And for the delusionned that think taste come with age, don't get me started !

Why do you have to like these foods? Why can't it just be that you don't like it?

:camera:? ;) I was about to post the same thing.

On topic: Just think about it like this, you don't live long enough to deny yourself any of lives' pleasures. Try them all, if you like them, do it again, if not, quit, but at least you know what it is. Just don't do anything inherently stupid.

find something that you can add to the food to make it taste good
use it
once you 'like the food'
start using less of the additive

Is it a requirement that you eat Korean food just 'cause the girl is Korean?

My GF's family is Taiwanese, and I've been raised American. I'm more open to eating stuff than a lot of white people, but I don't like seafood. As long as I TRY it, people seem to be happy.

DO NOT GAG, AND DO NOT SPIT IT OUT. Just suck it up and swallow it and politely refuse seconds.

have you ever heard of self limiting beliefs? it appears you have alot of them! Every perception we have is just "in our heads" we have the ability to believe dogshit tastes like candy.

Are you crazy? Everything is in your head. That's all perception is, chemical and electrical signals interacting with your brain and peripheral nervous system. Granted, are are some tastes that we have been evolutionary hard wired to have a distaste for but it's stuff like poisonous berries and rotted meat.

I can't remember ever gagging from a flavor. I really dislike eel but even when I eat it, i only am thinking to myself that I don't enjoy the flavor. I can't imagine a scenario where I would gag.

I think there's some mental prejudice you are not telling us about. How is it even possible to dislike bibimbop? It's basically rice, veggies, and steak with minimal flavors other than some red paste.

I never understood how people could dislike such a huge class of food. We're talking about multiple phyla, not just a few different species. If it's not seafood and you don't eat insects, then you're just eating out of phylum chordata (all birds, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals belong.) However, seafood consists of multiple phyla that are hugely different from each other like:

Arthropoda: crabs, lobsters, etc.
Chordata: salmon, mackeral, cod, halibut, sea bass, mahi mahi, perch, catfish, trout, smelt, shark, eel, etc.
Cnidaria: jellyfish, etc.
Echinodermata: sea urchins, sea cucumbers, etc.
Mollusca: scallops, clams, oysters, squid, octopus, etc.

Even within a single phylum, the diversity of flavor and texture between say eel, salmon, and shark is huge, so it's hard for me to understand how you can dislike every species within every seagoing phylum unless you simply don't eat meat.

I can never understand why white people like pizza and cheese either.

What foods are exotic is in the eye of the beyolder (or their culture.) Cheese is a weird food, but it tastes great once you get used to it.

i was picky as hell when i was a kid

id gag on any number of things that werent palatable to me: baked beans, butter beans, meatloaf, various vegetables....

some of them i still dont like, but it turns out that alot of the food i was eating was made by someone who couldnt boil water and have it come out right. since ive learned to cook things myself, ive found alot of foods that i didnt like...are good if you know what youre doing. still havent tried everything i want to, and some thing i may never like....

maybe this lady is just a lousy cook. my mother was, i wouldnt touch a porkchop for years because of her....stupid rubber porkchops
