Wow - I wonder why it is that pets get such preferential treatment over other animals? If you go out and shoot a deer and mount it's head on your wall, that's OK and totally sane.
Do that with a cat or dog(one that does not belong to someone else), you'll most likely get charged with animal cruelty and people will call you a psycho.

Killing something because you want to, for sport, or for fun is quite insane in my opinion. If you are not going to eat it, which I am sure you will not, you need to pay to have it put down or give it away to someone else.
If it is not your animal, and is a neighborhood stray or perhaps a neighbors animal, you need to speak to the neighbor about said animal, or take the animal in your vehicle to a destination of choice and drop it off there.

You should be able to do it any way you chose provided you do it in a way that is relatively quick and painless. But the best way to ensure the animal does not suffer is just to take it to a vet and have it euthanized.
Stop being a cheap bastard and go pay the money to put it down. Honestly, what better things are you going to spend your precious money on? Booze? Strippers? TV's? Cars?Do something right and selfless with your money for a change.

The ASPCA will take animals without charge. At the very least you can call animal control and report the animal as a stray and have it taken to a shelter for you.
If the animal is suffering and would be better put down, then I would say the most humane and free way to put an animal down is to put it in a bag and attach the bag to a car exhaust pipe. Run the car about 10 - 15 minutes. (I have never done this though but hear it is humane)

To the OP. The only way to answer your question would be for you to look up your state and municipality laws. The the other posters in the thread. Some people don't live in The City and sometimes when you are out in the sticks there isn't a vet open.
I've had to put down a few pets that got injured or were on their last legs.
The only advice I could give it to do something that makes it quick. If you're out in the country a shotgun to the head is the most effective and sure way to kill it. Just make sure you use buck or a slug. Bird shot is not a viable load for killing a mammal of any significant size. If that is not an option, this may sound cruel to some of the more "cloistered" city folk, but a shovel to the back of the head will also do the trick.
