How can I improve performance for 3DSMAX?

I have recently become interested in using 3DSMAX and photoshop to a lesser extent. I need to know what is the most effective hardware upgrade to boost performance in this application since it is quite a resource hog (mostly while rendering of course). My specs: Barton 2500, 512 RAM, 9700 PRO, 80G w/8mb cache. Would RAM be the best option, if so, what is the best size to upgrade to? or should I upgrade my video card? CPU etc.?

always RAM with these kinds of applications, sure, a processor would to, but I would try adding another stick of 512 and see how that does.

i think, you can't go wrong with a 1gig of ram, nonetheless it's becoming the standard, and these applications consume a huge amount of ram after working for awhile.

On the rendering phase, an SSE2-capable CPU would help (Pentium4C or Athlon64). How much of your time do you actually spend rendering, though, as opposed to modelling, composing and animating? From what I've done with trueSpace, I'd rate actual rendering as a very small part of the usage of the application. Radiosity computations can take days on end, while rendering the resulting radiosity solution can take a minute or two per frame. Keep it in perspective as to which part of the process you have to actually do the most of 🙂
