How can I hook up two comps to use Cable.

I have a comp on the second floor and one in the basement. How can I make them both work without connecting them together? I really don't want to run a ethernet cable through my house, plus it would need to be pretty long. I do have cable in the basement. Would I be able to just hook up that comp the same way as the other? If it does work, how will I get my IP addy? Thanks for any info.
 
Ummm...not unless you wanna get another cable modem...🙂...and those things are very critical as to how many lines are sharing with TVs and whatnot...or you could go wireless like John said. A wireless router should run you about $170...a wireless adapter should run you about $100...or a really long cable would cost about $50. 🙂 Go run winipcfg from the run menu to see your IP. BTW...your case looks like a fire hazard...lol...but then again..it is watercooled...😉
 
Going wireless is too expensive. So if I get another cable modem, it would work? I'm using winxp and winipcfg doesnt work.
 
Suck it up and run a cat5 cable to the basement. You can go 327ft without having to add a repeater.

BTW I have over 2000 ft cat5a cable FS much cheaper than wireless plus you can put a RJ45 in each room of the house. Pm if interested.

You probably can add another cable modem, but your provider will most likely charge you double for the extra service. 🙁

Your best bet is to run Cat5 down to the basement. Might be expensive, but it'll be worth it. Be sure to run multiple cables at the same time, just in case you want to use it for something else later. (ie. phone line, etc.)

Yah but wouldn't that mean you'd be paying twice the amount you'd be paying for? I dunno but you shoulda ask your cable company first. I figured it should work since my cable company only needs the new MAC address when adding another computer to my account. If winipcfg doesn't work...sorry...i haven't tried it on my machine yet... i was going to set up XP today from a clean install. Try ipconfig in the command prompt. Running a long ass cable is defnitely the way to go...for poor saps like me. 🙂
 
I have a phoneline home network and it works great. I have 10mb pci pna cards in both machines and I get over 8mb consistently. Which is fast enough for anything I'm doing over the network. I share certain drives, a printer, and of course my cable modem internet connection. Works great for the internet and I use it for backup. It's a little cheaper than wireless and from what I hear works a whole lot better. WinXP installs all appropriate drivers and configured the network automatically. I was sharing the internet connection immediately. All I had to do was share the drives and printer.

His main beef is he doesn't want to run a cable, or spend a lot of cash from what I have read. There is no need to purchase router when all he needs to do is simply run a single cat5 xover cable to the other pc and set up ICS.
 
Right, my mistake. I suppose you could get those things that let you use the phone-line or the electrical lines as a network.
 
Get a router with ethernet and Home PNA( which runs off a your regular phoneline; make sure your phone cables have 4 wires on them). A
Panasonic router off CompUSA is $99 (1 port ethernet only), a Linksys is about $150. Add the cost of a HPNA PCI card ($30) or check this out at Surplus computers for only $10. Windows Xp even has drivers built-in for them.
I currently have 4 PC's at home, two of them are hooked up thru ethernet and the other two (one at the living room and one over at the guest room). I use a Netgear RP114 router and a PE102 ethernet to HPNA bridge. This route is more expensive but since I really liked Netgear, I went with it🙂. My cards are the ones from surplus Computers.
Operation is transparent, the two HPNA PC's are like hooked up to 10mbs ethernet] while the other two are hooked up to 100mbs ethernet. 10mbs is perfectly OK for casual files transfers,
printer sharing, Network gaming and sharing my cable internet.
