How can I get Win2K to display "It's safe to turn off your computer now" when I shut it down?

I'm putting together a low end computer (made from my old spare parts) for my parents. When I had Win98, it used to display "It's safe to turn off your computer now" when I shut down. But I just realize that Win2K doesn't seem to do that.

I want the computer to prompt my parents to turn off the machine. This machine is made up of an old ASUS AT board (with a 500 Mhz Celeron) and it seems to take awhile for it to shut down (the old hard drives seem to take awhile to spin down). So I don't want them to turn off power too soon. I want the computer to display the "it's safe to turn off power now" message.

Is there a way to set up Win2K so it does that?

When you install windows, disable ACPI (F7 during install I believe). You'll need to re-install if you installed with ACPI support.

If you're using ACPI hardware, though, why bother? Just let Windows power off when it's finished, & tell them not to hit the power button when shutting down.

Wtf are you talking about? Win2k will shut down the computer itself. Just tell your parents to never use the power button.

Hmmm, I guess that would work. I'll just tell them to only turn off the monitor.

An AT motherboard is connected to a mechanical power switch, I don't think windows will be able to turn off the power supply.

That's correct, Win2k will not shut down an AT board. If it was an ATX board, and you wanted it to tell you to prompt you, you would go to the power options under the control panel, select the APM tab, and uncheck the box for Enable Advanced Power management

Oh I didn't see that it's AT. I didn't know they still made AT mobos when they made Celeron 500s.
