How can I get this to work: PCI tuner & cable modem

NTB

Moved into my apartment late last week, and just finally got around to contacting the cable company and having my internet & cable TV set up. Everything works fine, but I'd like to be able to use the PCI tuner I have in this computer, too - and there's only one cable jack in the wall.

If I connect the cable modem straight to the wall, it works beautifully. But if I put in a splitter so that I can run both, the modem won't connect. Any suggestions? I guess I could try another splitter, or I could go out and buy a different cable modem, and return this one to Cox. Any other ideas?

First, you need a High Bandwidth BiDirectional Spliter
in order for your cable modem to work thru a splitter

Look at this model: RCADT2SP

On this model, connect the modem to the pass thru output

You could also ask COX to provide a splitter ... they will do so
for either Little or No Cost ... next time you see their van in the
area, talk to the tech .. explain what you want to do .. he will
most likely provide the correct one Free

Also try to find a Zenith ZDS-5010 .... it is a bit better than the
rca at 2.4Ghz bandwidth and is also suitable for digital and modems

The splitter I tried *was* from Cox. I'll take a ride out to radioshack this weekend to look for the one you mentioned, though. Thanks for the help.

You really shouldn't need anythign special from the splitter. The one you have might just be bad. I've used several different 1ghz splitters, and never had a problem with either the TV or cable modem working fine.

Well, it should be the special digtal, high bandwidth, bidirectional model
If COX has provided it and it didn't work, call them back and let them
troubleshoot it .. it could very be a Signal Level Problem coming into
your home / apartment ... after all, you are Paying them for the services
you are looking to use ... let them earn their fee

what modem do you have? if its a Moto Surfboard 5120 or similar go to 192.168.100.1 and check the signal levels. A splittter should not kill your connection esspecially if cox gave you one, they don't ussually give out crappy low end splitters. So it sounds like to me you already have a really bad signal level if the modem dies from just one split.

That has been my experience here in mid-west Virginia, not far from the West Virginia border, with Adelphia. After years of flaky service and surprise line drops they ran a separate line to my cable modem and everything is /has been fine since. In the interim, I have replaced my older model Moto Surfboard 4200 with the latest version, replaced the Adelphia supplied splitter and had numerous occassions of the Adelphia guy running diagnostics on the lines and modem. Everything checked out fine and yet I exprienced line drops and slowness on occassion. After running a separate line, for the TV and for the modem, skipping the splitter, everything has been great (except that Adelphia perioddically runs manitenance on the system and doesn't bother informing the subscribers. You call them when the system goes down and they don't mention the plannned outage they just run you through the old modem/system reboot thing. When that doesn't work they setup a tech appointment. usually WHEN YOU GET UP THE NEXT DAY EVERYTHING IS FINE AND THE TECH WILL CALL TO SEE IF HE/SHE NEEDS TO SHOW UP).
