How can I get more out of my 2500+ Barton?

Well now that my system is running properly I started playing around with overclocking.

So far my highest stable speed is exactly 2000MHz. I can't run at 2100 even on 1.75v. The CPU temps in the BIOS are about 55-58 degrees at these speeds, but anything over 2000MHz just reboots while in games. The motherboard temp is 28-30.

I have tried 190x10,5 and upped the FSB bit by bit up to 220x9 and both seem OK, so I know the CPU and memory can do over 200 FSB. It just seems the CPU wont take anything over 2000 ;(

What's my option now? How far should I go on core voltage? I realise my Volcano 7+ is holding me back, but right now I can't upgrade the HSF.

Specs are:
2500+ Barton DKV4D 0320MPMW
Asus A7N8X Deluxe r2.0 with 1004 Uber BIOS
Volcano 7+
2x512 Infineon PC3200
ATi Radeon 9500@9700

it seems that the general trend is that week 13 and after are the best OCers. maybe you just reache your chips limits? you can try 1.8V but looking at the temps, i dont think its a good idea

I had the same problem, I could boot into windows at 2400MHz, but anything over 2000MHz was not stable. I turned my fsb down to 180 and perfect stability at 2250MHz. I was running 203MHz fsb speeds with a 1700+, so I knew something was up. I cut the third L12 bridge to default to a 266MHz fsb cpu instead of a 333MHz one. Perfection, running 2300MHz at 1.80v. The Barton 2500+ needs more voltage then my 1700+ at 2300MHz, which only needed 1.7v. But it actually runs a couple of degrees cooler.

Funny thing though, now I am stable at 200MHz instead of 203MHz. I noticed my 2003 benchmark (1600x1200) program dropped from 98/59 to 85/48. My memory benchmarks were the same, but 3DMark2001 also dropped to 14.3K. I dropped to 199MHz and my scores went back to normal, 98/59 and 15K. What's up with that? I noticed the bios message changes from 333MHz DDR at 199MHz to 400MHz DDR at 200MHz. Maybe the motherboard (8RDA) is kicking in some lower timings? If you think that's strange, it only does this with the Barton 2500+, the 1700+ doesn't slow down gaming benchmarks at 200MHz and higher fsb speeds.

I'm running my 2500+ at 2000Mhz (10x200) too. The system runs just fine at 10.5x200 for 20 minutes or so, and then suddenly reboots, and will not even post at anything higher. I had the same chip in an older KT400 chipset m/b, and it would not do 200fsb, so i ran it at 12x166 on that system. I'm going to update to a newer 2500+ when I get the chance, hopefully to squeeze out some more performance.

Thanks for the tips guys. So it could be that I'm at the limit with my current HSF... :(

I know that the Bartons don't overclock as far as 1700+s or 2100+s but I was hoping for more than 200MHz from the 2500+. Still it's a complete beast compared to my old setup. Gotta love AMD and nForce2 :)

Some motherboards run fine at 200MHz fsb speeds with a 333MHz default cpu. Others have a problem. Just cut the 3rd L12 bridge and you will be able to run stable at 200.

Have you tried the 11.5 multiplier?

I have mine running 11.5x190 @ default voltage. Using the a7n8x ver. 2.0, slk800, mushkin 3200. It booted fine at 11x200 and 11.5x200 but I backed it down, for now.

Mine's a week 20 also.
