How can I get Hotmail working in Outlook?

I am using Outlook 2003 accessing free Hotmail account and it was working fine (despite some say it can't be done). But after installing IE7 beta2, it stopped working. Can anyone offer me some help so that I can access my Hotmail from Outlook?

Thanks!

Interesting. After I installed IE7 beta 2 I had some difficulties getting my Hotmail account to work in Outlook 2003. I wound up deleting the Hotmail account from within Outlook and creating a new account. I also removed the Hotmail account from inclusion in the Send/Receive settings. I just highlight the inbox or junk mail box instead of trying to use the Hotmail account in the same manner as the POP3 accounts.

According to the Hotmail site, you have to have the Paid versions of Hotmail to get it to work with Outlook or Outlook Express. I assume Hotmail not working when IE7 was installed was a planned "feature".

Yes, but for some reason, my free hotmail works on Outlook 2003

Right, but not after installing IE7. I'm sure they used IE to break it on purpose. My hotmail works with Outlook express, but stopped when I installed IE7. Uninstalled IE7 and *poof* hotmail & OE work together again.

I find that highly unlikely. If they wanted to cut off free service they would do it at the server side. I remember having read somewhere that the limitation was only being applied to new accounts (so you didn't lose the functionality on a free account if you were already using it) so maybe that's why he can still do it with IE6.

IIRC, hotmail in Outlook is just one big ActiveX control anyways. Given that IE7 isn't finished yet (and it can't do windowsupdate either yet right?) it's probably just an accidental breakage.

Open up OE, go to accounts and add a new account. When you walk through the wizard, it see's that it's a hotmail account when you type in the email address and automatically adds the correct server address/settings.

That very well may be true, but it's really all speculation at this point.

Here is error message..

Could not connect to Hotmail as ****@msn.com.

Hotmail no longer allows email access via Outlook Express for free email accounts.

Please visit http://www.hotmail.com/oe to learn more.

Account: 'Hotmail', Server: 'http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp', Protocol: HTTPMail, Server Response: 'Access to Hotmail via Outlook and Outlook Express now requires a subscription. Please sign up at http://join.msn.com/general/Email', Port: 0, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCCF6

Doing all that does not work for me. I get an error that says that I need a subscription and this an old account that was created before MS took it over.

I never knew the free hotmail can't be used with OE. I've used it in the past without a problem. In fact, there's a freaking wizard built into OE that helps you set it up.

It doesn't work anymore, with the exception that apparently it works with addresses that people have had for a long time. I don't know how long though because one of mine is at least 3 years old and it doesn't work.

I did get Hotmail working with OE using something called Freepops, but I don't really like using software that I don't know much about, so I only used it to download my messages for backup and don't leave it running.

But it might be perfectly safe, to tell the truth, I don't even know what it does, except I guess it acts as a pop3 server or something.

This is more or less why I stopped using hotmail. I can't see any good reason to use a service that doesn't offer a standard access protocol like pop or imap. That and they're way behind the game in terms of storage space 😛

I started using Gmail the other day, they've got a really clean POP3 setup. Just FYI. I'll never drop my hotmail account though, I've had it for around 8-10 years, people always know how to find me.

That's my problem, there's too many people that only know how to reach me through hotmail, people I don't even remember !

Last I checked, my FREE hotmail account wont work with ANY email program.
You have to access it through the web or pay of you want POP3 or IMAP or HTTP or whatever.

And that is a fairly recent change, by the way.
For the longest time a free hotmail account could be used with mail programs.
I guess they decided they werent making enough ad revenue that way.
