Hi guys,

I recently found out that some of my personal information has been used by someone who isn't me. I found out information about a transaction and was able to obtain an IP address of the user. I want to file a police report, giving them all the information I have. I know it's possible to track the name/address or a particular IP, but I can't remember how off the top of my head. Can someone help me out? I'll be reporting them to the police and to their ISP.

an IP address will tell you nothing except (possibly) the geographic location of the person.
Oh look! you narrowed it down to NYC!

Not much you can do with an IP - report the issue to police and if they feel like it's a big enough deal, they'll subpoena the ISP that owns the IP to find out who was using it. However, if the person was savvy, that isn't going to go very far either.

Yeah, that's all he can find out, but if he gives it to the cops and they go the the ISP, more than likely they will cooperate and tell them which account was linked to that IP.

Honestly, more than likely, they won't unless it was something DRASTIC the person did.
