How can i erase my hdd so it cant be recovered??

Ok so lets say i need to erace all the data on my hdd fast i mean 10 sec fas is there any program that can kill it but after that i dont whant it to be readable in any way i know using programs that write 00 ti the hdd but that is wayyy to slow any other way guys?

Hi,

Burn it and bury it. Seriously, it can't be done in a physically non-destructive way very quickly. Also, there is no 100% way. If you throw enough time and money at it you wil almost always be able to get the data back.

Stick with the slower overwriting method, it's the most practical for what I guess your needs are.

There are tools that let you "wipe" a disk clean. Some put all 0's, all 1's, or a mixture. You'd have to run it about 50 times though, because if someone had the time, equipment, and money, they could get your data back after that many wipes. You'd have to be a spy or something for anyone to want to actually do that though....

EDIT: whenever I sell a hard drive, I usually wipe it once.
 
ok so there is no way if all fails i was thinking making a swich on the psu cable that is in the hdd
make the 5 volt more like 12 but that is just gonna burn the motor and maby the board i think

Or maby just get the the sticker thats on the hdd you you know when you get it out there is a hole so you can spray something static in it if there is any spray like that think that wil help?
 
Dude, what the heck are you so worried about? Did you steal from the Russian government or something????

Here's a sure-fire way to destroy it.
1. Smash with sledge hammer about 50 times.
2. Find all the itty bitty pieces of the platter and pick them up.
3. Put the platter pieces in a ceramic dish for melting.
4. Place the dish over a propane burner in a chemistry lab and melt it.
5. grind up the melted metal into dust.
6. throw it up in the wind over the ocean and let it float away......
 
If you don't wanna resale it, just do what the IT guys as my bro's company do- Drive a nail through it and be done with it.
 
The latest hacker trick is to get a hold of this stuff, (I don't remember the name of it, though thescreensavers demonstrated it a while ago), that is a metal compound, that burns white hot. The paranoid hacker has it set up so that it is attached to his hard drives with some sort of igniter. Then, with a combination of emergency keyboard strokes (which he applies as they kick his door in) it triggers this stuff to start burning, melting anything it touches. The key thing being the platters in the hard drive. The stuff is burning so hot, you basically have to watch it burn itself out, so trying to put it out with an extinguisher won't work (not something you want to test in your house!).

I've also heard of them having a super powerful electromagnet inside their case. When the door busts open, they flip a switch and the magnet erases everything. This can't be no slouch magnet, because it takes alot to actually have a strong enough field to disrupt the data on the drive (considering there already are magnets inside a hard drive).

I suppose the other thing would be to use IBM hard drives. At one time they were using glass platters. So then you could have the drive sitting outside the case with a sign and a big hammer saying "Break in Case of Emergency". They would have a pretty tough time putting that humpty-dumpty back together again.
 
i think redbeard is talking about thermite - it's a mix of alumimun and iron that burns VERY hot, you just have to get the fire going (supply decent amperage and it'll spark). But like I said earlier, the magnet thing will work quite efficiently (that's how the gov't removes data from hdds).

Nah, I'm sure DriveSavers could put it all back together... but I'd hate to see the bill!

Back to reality for a bit - there is no way to 100% (only 99.99%) erase or overwrite data after being written to a HD. For most people that's enough. If you need more protection, then I suggest using encryption. A transparent hardware IDE-interface encryption device, like the Abit SecureIDE, with removable hardware "keys", is probably along the lines of something that you might want to check out. I think that SiiG offers something like that as well.

So instead of having to destroy your entire HD, you just yank the key dongle out, and toss it or flush it or eat it or something. (What you do under those circumstances is up to you - I have no idea what I would do. Mostly just sigh and not worry about it, I don't have national secrets on my machine.)

Shotgun from 1m'll do a sufficient job in even less than 10 seconds; just make sure you're wearing a safety mask and standing behind a plexiglass shield... :roll:
