I used TweakUI to revert to the WinME style search pane, but I can't get ANY searches done. The reason is that I have about 12,000 zip files that I use regularly (In ZIP form) and wouldn't consider removing due to MS' quirk. What happens is when I search for a filename, XP searches EVERYTHING Explorer has access to, including zip files. But instead of just searching the filename portion of the zip without extracting file, it extracts ALL 12,000 just to search the filenames. I'm NOT doing a "containing text search" (Though I'd like to disable this in that event also) so it should not be doing this. I've left it searching all night once & it still didn't even get halfway through that directory. How can I diable XP's annoying Zip Folders feature?!

To disable the compressed folder in XP

( this may or may NOT be what you are looking for)
it stops the build-in zip file function : stops zip files from being listed in folder tree too.

goto Run (under startup)
and enter the following command:
regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll

Thnx. For the record, OS Zip support will continue re-activating itself unless you:
Run "regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll "
Open a STANDARD folder and go to Tools>Folder Options>File Types and delete the ZIP file type
Then allow another application to associate w/ *.zip files.
I couldn't do it any other way.
