I have windows 2000 and when I downloaded a file a trojan virus was also installed my computer. I got the virus removed but one of the files still exist and this file is the system32.dll file. I tried removing it but it gave me an error message that it can't because Windows is using it. What this file does is basically keep my homepage at a search engine full of porn sites and no matter how many times I change my internet options to whatever homepage I want, this files changes it back to that search engine. This file is located in my C:\WINNT\system32 folder. It also has a child file called host and that file I can delete but it keeps reappearing and if I change the contents in there the contents will eventually go back to the default contents. I'm sure if I can delete the system32.dll I can delete the host file as well. Can anybody help me out with my problem?

A few things to try. Go into safe mode by pressing F8 before your computer boots up in Windows to go into safe mode. Then you could either delete the file, or go to run and type regsvr /u /i "Dllname." If the Dll keeps reappearing, you might need to check your boot files (msconfig, sysedit) and get rid of anything that might be causing it. You can also search different databases and see if they have your particular ailment listed, hopefully with a simple cure. Don't forget to check what runs at startup in msconfig. You could also put a Software Restriction Policy on the particular file until you have a good solution.

Files in system32 are also mirrored in system32/dllcache. (File protection - incase someone deletes one) The best way to remove them is by booting with the Windows Install CD, and hitting R to enter the recovery console which is a similar to a DOS command prompt. You can then delete both files in both folders.

As for the HOSTS file, you dont need to delete it, just make sure it isnt read only, open it, and delete any entries. Save the file, and close it.

dont usually reply but just spent a long 2 days trying to remove a trojan on xp.

in the end i had everything removed except a sys32 file. i was able to delete everything in safemode except the infected file. i used a program called trojan remover (30 day free trial) and ran it only on the infected file. it did its thing and asked me to reboot and the file was gone.
