How can I convert a video I encoded from my tuner into DivX, Xvid or anything?

When I "tape" TV shows with my Leadtek Winfast TV2000XP TV-Tuner Card, I get like 1gig mpg, for half an hour of TV Show. Plus, the MPG is encoded with my own Leadtek codecs, so If I send them to my friends, they can't see it.

How could I convert those mpg into divx?. I tried adobe premiere, but premiere doesn't seem to be able to find the leadtek codecs, and I don't know how to configure it either.

Dr. Divx is a simple program for converting mpgs to divx. As long as they have the divx codec installed they will be able to view it. I think that WMP9 can also play divx, maybe??..

MPEG can include sub/supersets like ATI's VCR codec and HD transport streams. I'm not sure, but if he's encoding MPEG-2, it could simply be that his friends don't have the MPEG-2 codec required to play back the file rather than a truely proprietary codec. MPEG-1 has native support, but MPEG-2 requires the codec normally installed by software DVD players.
