I bought the game from Ebay but the box was open. Is there a way I can check if the key is already in use or not? And if it is, can I request a new key from Valve (since I bought it from Ebay). I have the whole collectors edition package and the seller does not accept returns :(

You'll know if the key is in use or not when you try to connect to Steam...good luck and hopefully you dont fall into the hands of eGay

I am gonna mail in the insert with the key to valve, it looks like they will be able to compensate me with a new key :)

Anyone have luck with them replacing a stolen key?

That's pretty cool of Valve IMHO.

It also lets them deactivate that old key so if someone ripped you off they won't be able to play any longer. mwahaha

Don't ever buy a Valve game on Ebay. You aren't allowed to sell the game to someone else, it's against the EULA, so chances are they won't replace it.

1 - It was from a company selling the game.
2 - I didnt know this.
3 - I looked at their site, they dont make you send in receipts or proof of purchase. I think it is more than fair, I paid money for this game and the person who stole the key didnt.

However, I will never buy games from Ebay in the future.

I've never heard of legit companies selling software on Ebay.

In your defense, it's a bit hard to abide by a EULA you've never seen. :p

Just try to register the key with valve. If it's ever been registered you won't be able to use it.
I've heard it takes months to get a new key form valve. You be better off appealing through ebay. I think there is an automatic insurance plus dispute resolution.
