How can I burn SVCD's? What software do YOU use?

This question has been asked a million times...sorry. A search on SVCD didn't bring up anything that answered my question. I have some videos in multiple different formats that I want to burn and play on my DVD player (it does play SVCD)... how do I go about it? I've heard Nero, which I own, is no good for it... If so what program should I use.

Thanks for any help... hell thanks for the nef's too.

OK.. I'm starting my first encode now using TMPEG... It says it's a thirty day trial... are there any good free proggies that will allow me to encode a bunch of crap or if I have to pay what's the cheapest I can get by with (feel free to PM me with suggestions)

Thanks

Holy crap.. I just checked the progress... maybe this isn't worth it... I've got 512 MB DDRam and a Duron 900 and 45 minutes of encoding is goig to take three hours... yikes.....

Would my encode time be significantly reduced by upgrading the processor?... and how can I explain to my wife how necessary it is :)

Yes, you should see quite an increase with a faster processor. I use an Athlon XP 1900+ and can encode 80 min in about an hour.

Short answer, define significant.

For instance in my rig blackie (see rigs link below) I can encode 2 hours of movie in about 3 hours. That's in DivX however, I'm not sure how long it will take for SVCDs. In bluey (see rigs link below) it takes a few minutes longer.

Um, since when is Nero bad for BURNING vcd's? I always use it. TMPGEnc to encode. It takes a lot of practice to master all the settings in TMPGEnc but once you do it's great. TMPGEnc is such a damn amazing piece of software that I can get it to make an mpeg file look like it's a VCD (MPEG1) even though it's an MPEG2 (SVCD) which my player doesn't support. But trick my player into thinking it's a normal VCD and it plays SVCD's just fine.

In my ignorance I posted that. I think it's if you attempt to use Nero to encode from a different format there is a problem with the audio synch? Maybe...

I downloaded TMPGEnc and used it and everything seemed to go well...

so is that a general consensus? use TMPGEnc to encode and Nero to burn?... anybody absolutely hate that and want to post an alternative?

I just finished my first encode and am burning it using Nero so we'll see how it goes... I hate this.. the anticipation that i just wasted five hours that I could have been looking at pr0n or something constructive like that.

Just another vote for TMPGenc and Nero for burning (or even Roxio . . . even though most ppl here hate it.)

I converted all mine on a Celeron 600@900 with 256MB RAM. It's not very fast (converts about 1.5hrs of DIVX video into SVCD format in about 4-5 hours if I remember correctly) but since it's just a spare box and not my primary system it doesn't bother me with the wait.

However, I personally gave up on converting downloaded DIVX files into SVCD awhile back since it's not really worth the hassle. While I never really had any audio sync problems, the video quality, while good, was still noticeably weaker and noisier than DVD (and sometimes even broadcast) once you got it converted and on your TV screen. It also depends too much on the source DIVX rip or video quality too. This is all just assuming you're doing what the majority of people do (download DIVX rips online and then convert them to SVCD for viewing in your DVD player.) I still download DIVX movies to watch while I'm working at the office, but don't mess with them for TV viewing anymore since I just buy stuff I want for long term.

I do think SVCD would be VERY useful for converting digital home movies to DVD-player compatible format though. I've seen examples of SVCD quality from these and those look VERY nice. Unfortunately, I don't have a digital camcorder :( Then again, I don't really need one.

Thanks for the reply...
The reason I'm doing it is not only to watch it on a television so other people can watch it with me... and to get it off my hard drive... I don't like leaving it sit. I try and burn stuff and file it to get it off my drive. It's also fun to have an enormous collection of CD's that have everything you can think of on them... call me OCD :)

duron = sh!t when encoding files. if you're serious about encoding/decoding, get a REAL processor. TMPGEnc is really the best encoder that's free. the 30 day trial thing sucks but if you decide to pay for it, i think it's worth it.

as for burning SVCDs, nero really is good. just make sure your source file is all synced up and perfect before you try to burn it.

I use Nero for burning SVCDs. I pack them seperately into Bin/Cue files though, and load up the Cue into Nero.
