How can I build a crazy LED hard drive clock like this?

Not fake. HDD's have a position sensor that let the drive know where it is in the rotation (or maybe it only ticks once per rotation) that he's using. The only issue I have is how non-washed out the colors are.

haha pretty wicked,
he must know the the RPMs of the motor and that will give you the fractional position of the slot at any point in time.

Gather these parts:

1. hard drive
2. led lights

Instructions:

1. put led lights on hard drive

Done.

that was an exact project we did in my intro to microcontrollers class. We called it a sky writer I believe. I still have some of the fans we used somewhere.

You have an unhealthy obsession with clocks. Are you Swiss, perchance?

That is pretty cool if you could make it work though.

I'd love to see a video response where someone does just this. Puts lights in HD, seals it up, turns it on and has the thing tear itself to pieces. Then have his asking at the end of the video "what the fuck man, I did it exactly like yours."

I have a dead 60GB if anybody is interested in doing something like this. Been trying to get rid of it forever in the freebies thread, would make my day if somebody took it off my hands and used it for something cool like this. :p
