how can I automatically transfer money each month?

my local bank, despite having convenient locations, fucking sucks, so if the answer is "any bank should be able to do this," my bank probably can't. :\

I need to automate my monthly rent payments. it's getting kind of annoying. I rent from my 90 year-old great-aunt; she doesn't quite have dementia, but let's say she gets things addled pretty easily. she doesn't have any kids, so my mom manages all of her finances... once/month, I write out my rent check and give it to my mom to deposit. but my mom can be flaky about going to the bank, so for a week or two every month, I have to constantly remember that I have less money available in my checking account than my balance statement would otherwise lead me to believe.

so not using my local bank and ideally not paying any fees, any suggestions on where to go to automatically transfer money from my checking account to my aunt's check every month?

INGDirect's Electric Orange checking bill payment might do it as an electronic transfer instead of making and sending a paper check. But it is going to an individual instead of a company, so who knows?

You could always learn to balance a checkbook register 🙂

why are you asking this question to stranges on the internet and not you bank? I know with my bank I can setup automatic transfers, or bill payment to whatever account every month. If you bank offers this I don't know...

What bank do you have? Every bank can do this, get one that can and stop doing business with that homo bank that can't

Is your aunt's bank account at the same bank? If you walk in, write a check, and ask to deposit it in your aunt's account, they'll probably let you. Failing that, you could also just mail the check to the bank with a deposit slip filled out in your aunt's name. (It's been a while since I got DD, but years ago, I used to just mail my paychecks in on Friday and they'd be deposited Monday.)

Anybody outside your bank would probably charge you a fee to do it.

Instead of a check, why not give you mom cash, and get a receipt showing proof of payment?

I looked into it awhile ago and what I got was basically that they could automatically mail out a check, but not electronically transfer the funds... so, while it would save me a step of having to write out a check and drive 5 minutes to my parents' house, it wouldn't eliminate the inconvenience of someone having to go to my great aunt's bank and deposit said check.

Write a check for the whole year so that you just have to do it once per year.

If you want to keep your current bank you can start a 2nd account with a larger bank. Link your current account to it and have that bank take the rent out from your account every month. Then use that bank's bill pay program to set up a payment to your aunt's account. Usually there's no charge for bringing money into the account. You might have to look aorund to see which banks have free bill pay.

Eh? All the banks I'm a member of let you do this crap with online bill pay, just set up a recurring payment. I only go to the bank anymore to cash the occasional rebate check, god I hate banks.

Why not just adjust your direct deposit to split between your account and your mother's account?

I have my paycheck split between three different accounts I use for various things.

Perhaps keep a spreadsheet of your bank account, so you know how much you "actually" have. This would only get tricky if you use your debit card frequently. Otherwise, just tally all checks and credit card/rent/utility bills as they come. It's also a good way to watch for fraud. If your statement doesn't match the spreadsheet, you need to check things.
