How can I add my Netgear WiFi router to my Linksys router?

My current network is composed of my cable modem running into my Linksys (BEFSR41) router with various computers hooked up. Now I'd like to add my Netgear wireless router (WGT624) into the mix so I can get the internet for two laptops.

I can get the internet to work for the laptops when I use the Netgear by itself, but so far have been unsuccessful getting wireless internet using both routers. When I use an ethernet cable to connect the internet port of the Netgear to a regular port on the Linksys, it appears to have a connection to the internet (at least the "i" lights up).

How can I hook my wireless router into my wired router to share internet?

Oh yeah, I did try using an ethernet cable connecting the internet port of the wireless router to the uplink port of the wired router. Doing so knocks off the connection to my computer, which is connected to the wired router and the wireless router doesn't recognize any internet connection. I thought the purpose of the uplink was just for cases like mine. I assume in order to connect the wireless router into a standard port on the wired router I will need a cross over cable, is that correct?

What you need to do is turn the Netgear into a wireless access point. The first thing you want to do is don't connect the Netgear to your network just yet but connect a PC directly to it so you can do some configuration stuff. Log into the Netgear (usually 192.168.0.1) using the username and password that the router is assigned. Go to the LAN IP menu and disable DHCP and also assign the router an IP address such as 192.168.0.99 or whatever you choose. Apply the settings and log out. Disconnect the PC from the router and connect one of the router's local ports to one of the ports on your Linksys. Now whenever you need to access the Netgear router such configuring WEP, etc., you can log on to it at the IP address you assigned earlier. Hope this works for you. Good luck.

ok, not all is well. file sharing doesnt seem to work wirelessly for some reason. it used to work when wired b4. workgroups are still the same..(workgroup). but the wired pc cannot be seen on wireless laptop, and vice versa. the ssid doesn't need to be the same as the workgroup name right? netbios/netbeui or whatever works through wireless? thats what i have it set to and used when i was wired before. i'm confused.

Wireless is a merely HighTech replacement to the Wire (Aka CAT5).

However NetBEUI might have problems on some APs.

Other wise every thing that works with wire should work with Wireless.

Link to: Wireless - Basic Configuration.

If you are using WinXP bind both NetBEUI and TCP.IP to the File Sharing.

Unlike Win98 WinXP is smart enough to use the one that is best for the situation.

If you have Sharing problems.

Log to this page it has a lot of links to instructions to Windows Network Settings, and Sharing.
