Verizon has the most hideous customer service bar none. I have a fork protruding from my left eye as a message to those who want to try Verizon...

Didn't you read the last bill? It's gone to collections. The first rule of the phone company is that you pay the phone company regardless if the bill is right.

i highly suggest you go back with Comcast. I made the same decision about a year ago wanting to save some money.
I got the DSL modem and was excited to give it a try. The best speed I got was 1mpbs. I never got anything over that.
I called to complain and all the rep told me was that I was too far from the CO! I am about 7000 feet!!!! I dont think that's too bad.
Well, I sucked it up and I'm currently paying more with Comcast, but my speed has been consistent.

What's CO? I assume it's the bandwidth providing node or something and how do I find out what the nearest CO is to my house?

the CO is the Central Office, this is where your phone line is actually patched into the phone companys network. dslreports has a checker to see where the nearest one is to you. and people can give reports as to if your CO is wired for DSL

Comcast Cable
4 mb down / 384 kb up
$42.95 a month
I had to buy my own modem, otherwise +$3 a month for lease.

Verizon DSL
3 mb down / 768 kb up
$29.95 a month + additional $10 off for first three months

Absolutely no cost and hassle for me to switch
Free Modem/Wireless router for me to keep after one year.
No activation charge, no set up fee
No charge on shipping above router
No truckroll or in-house appointment, they simply turn it on through my phoneline. (I hated Comcast's truckrolls and workers coming in my house with dirty shoes & making a mess everywhere.)

How can Comcast compete with this?!?

Because I have to pay Bellsouth $29.99 a month for phone service on top of the DSL price.

hmm... I didn't think of that. I had called verizon immediately after I received the bill, and the CSR's I talked to said they notified the local offices and the collection agency. But given verizon's track record perhaps I should be worried...

As for Upload, (which is x2 over comcast) it should help out torrents a lot, whicn in turn will increase my download as well.

Perhaps not, but you are much more likely to get the advertised speed from cable.

edit: Oh, and you also have to pay for a POTS line, which adds to the cost. The naked DSL is more expensive.

edit2: If they even provide naked DSL. Stingy bastiges.

I am anxiously awaiting FIOS in my area.

i'm in central nj, and verizon won't let me get anything higher than 1.5mbps down :(

i guess it doesn't matter much anymore, i haven't really downloaded anything in months, but still...it sucks that they're SO SLOW at updating anything in my area...

I don't know if it is true but someone told me that if you just get comcast internet you get basic free. Not as part of a package but you just hook up the cable to the TV and it works.

I heard that if you go to Walmart, you get gum for free. Not as part of a promotion, but when you stick it in your pocket while no one is watching.

No speeds are guaranteed.

Then what the hell is your point?

The point is that cable bandwidth depends on local utilization - how much your neighbors use. DSL bandwidth depends on distance, line quality, and a dozen other variables, including local usage over a MUCH LARGER AREA.

I don't feel like dealing with PPPoE. If/when FIOS becomes available I may re-examine that objection.

If you're close to the CO and you don't have a need for crazy downloads, it is a no brainer. DSL's main problem is its availability is pretty tight. People say the download is slower...but honestly the only large things I download on an even semi frequent basis are pr0n movies and I'm usually limited by the other guys upload speed which rarely exceeds like 32k (which is what? like 256k up?).

All I want is decent speed and good pings. And even the 384/128 provides that. And it costs less than cable.

That said, mine currently isn't setup yet...and I would have to agree that so far, verizon CS are a bunch of disorganized retards who appear to be totally incapable of doing their job at even 50% capacity.

But I'm giving them a shot, since it costs about half as much as cable would and I hate Adelphia like poison.

I've got Comcast digital cable and high-speed internet for $74/mo.

I  Comcast.

I've heard more complaints about DSL being finiky than cable. But, if it works for ya, cool.

I've got comcast, and I hope they have more DNS outages. When that happened there was ZERO traffic, and since i run my own dns, I had full use of my conneciton and pigns were like <10 to any server.

I signed up for Verizon's 4 Mb / 768k service. On it's best day my DSL modem connected at 416k down / 160k up. 5 technician visits later I cancelled and switched to comcast. My connection usually tests in the 3.3 Mb range with comcast.

Where did you get that? Due to a screwup with AT&T wireless they tried to collect a bill that was incorrect. After sending it to collections I simply sent a letter to all three credit agencies and called the collections. The credit agencies simply took the record off my report and the collections apologized. Took very little time to do!

You kids don't know how good you have it! Back in 2000, I paid $60 a month for DSL from a local company for 384 kbs download. Quit yer complainin'!
