"How can anyone major in this crap?"
My girlfriend pretty much said the same thing after sitting in on my Comparative Physiology class once.

Sociology. Seriously, what a load of crap. I hate this class, but need to take it to meet an elective requirement. Nothing like a fifth year senior sitting in a class of 400-500 freshman.

Well, what else are all those "student" athletes going to major in???

You want sexist? Take the broom out of your ass and put it to work sweeping the floors like a woman should be doing. Oh and fetch me a beer while you're at it.

Now THAT'S sexist.

Bah

I had a Feminazi Lit teacher take 10 points of a term paper once because I used Mrs. instead of Ms.. Her reply was something like "I am not owned by any man and you are wrong to assume so". I heard she did that to others in the class also, what a b!tch.

We had a couple of smart athletes at my university... one football player was getting his MS in Electrical Engineering, basketball player that was in advanced math courses in his freshman year, etc. Maybe that's why we always lost :) Then you had the Human Organizational Development student athletes :D

Yep, upper-level sociology classes are definitely more interesting.

Start with some of the works from classical sociologists like Tönnies, Weber, Simmel and Durkheim regarding urbanization. Next, comparatively analyze topics such as "ethnicity and military entrance examinations". One may even arrive at the conclusion that a higher percentage of whites than blacks were rejected from military service during the Vietnam conflict.

Then conduct statistical analysis of migration patterns from the "Rust Belt" to the "Bible Belt" for certain years/decades. Finally, wrap the day up by comparing the increasing prison population, new prison construction, the 'War on Drugs', and economic revitalization of those communities surrounding the new prisons.

Sociology is awesome! The problem is that it doesn't pay sh!t unless one has a position in government or academia.

LOL! I had to take a Mythology course to satisfy my humanities requirements and my prof was one of those. All she kept talking about was women and mother earth. Figures she gave all the girls As and the men Bs or worse.

She is fairly moderate, but she is totally offended that this book is being offered as a supposedly objective academic book.
Right now she's reading the chapter that is all about how the U.S. is a society where people are born into a certain socio-economic class and have no opportunity to ever move above that class. OMG, it makes me sick that this is what they are teaching college students. If that was the case, there would be no reason for any of these people to even be in college. And the professor is constantly making derogatory remarks about conservative people in the media and in government. Even if I was a liberal, I would be offended at this kind of blatant bias taking place in an institution that is supported by tax dollars. And we are in a fairly conservative city.

"Objective academic book?" No such thing.

let me guess, rich white guy who grew up in a rich white community.
there is probably a little bit more than just that statement in the chapter as well.....

also, nothing wrong with "feminazis"
and, about the word "mankind" - journals will not publish papers with words like that. won't publish if you just use "him/he/his" - its not just a feminazi thing, its bigger than that

Well rounded in what? Sleeping while the professors plays old episodes of dateline that I have already seen?
Yes. Because in reality that's about how eventful the real world is.
I'm not sure if you have experienced anything but the plush academic life. If you havn't, and you arn't impressed by what you see, try and stay in school forever. You will be happier there. Just don't take any more sociology. ;)

I remember when I was taking my required liberal art. I chose sociology because it seemed more interesting than any other 100 level choices I had. About the third week in, I was asked: "If you were/are making so much money at computers, why are you back in school, let alone in this class?". I responded with: "I don't know, that's a really good question."
I left, and never came back.
