How can anyone justify to buy a $500-$1,000 video card(s)?

Because I buy one $500 video card and don't upgrade it for the next 3 years. Sure, performance is kinda crappy by comparison that last year, but what I'd be able to buy for $166 if I upgraded my card every year wouldn't be much better. Especially since the more expensive cards tend to overclock much easier.

If you've got a 17" monitor, I don't see much point.

But I wanted to get the most out of my 2005FPW and I regrettfully (well not any more) plopped down $250 on an 800xl.

I figure I'll use the the thing for a good two years. So that breaks down to like $10.50 a month for "entertainment".

I can't really see myself spending much more than that for video games. This alone was almost double what I paid for my entire Xbox and almost 3x as much as my Gamecube.

Was it worth it? I dunno. Games sure do look a lot more impressive at 1680x1050 with all the bells and whistles.

My poor Geforce4 MX4000 just can't hold a candle to the 800xl.

*shrugs*

also, the prices on these card will drop 30-40% in a couple of months. =\

At the same time, something a lot better will come out, making no real point and a vicious cycle of multiple cards being bought...

danny~!

maybe because i'm poor but you'd never catch me spending that much on a gpu. even worse, 2 7800gtx in sli ~$900-$1,000. i could build another computer with that much money. anyway, that's just my short rant. 🙂

How much would you spend?

I don't do cutting edge videocards anymore. I used to be into that but it's a waste of money just for bragging rights. My older ATI 9800Pro can run everything out now... maybe not with 8xAA enabled but I am used to jaggies, lol.

It's best to wait a few months for the prices to break. I am waiting for the ATI All-In-Wonder 800XT to get cheap enough(under $250) to upgrade again. 😀

superb answer!!!!

Any hobby has very expensive, somewhat disposable items. Heck, just look at golf and phothagraphy.
