AMD has been gaining marketshare every quarter so far (12 quarter in a row)...though there is a rumour that they might finally lose some this quarter.

Don't know that the next gen cpu of AMD is the intended purpose of the price cut. AMD is possibly a tad vunerable due to its ATI take over. Intel is trying to squeeze the cash flow of AMD a little hping to buy time on some of the new plans the new consortium has. The integrated chipset market is the one I think Intel wants to protect here.
