How can a public university be scrutinized over accepting fewer minorities?

Recently, UCLA has faced considerable public scrutiny for a steady drop in underrepresented minority students that are both admitted and choose to enroll, but Lavine said the controversial admissions statistics are part of a larger examination of the fairness of UCLA's admissions process.

At a private university maybe I can understand since they're not obligated to follow any laws/guidelines..but at a public university where it's unlawful to use race as a factor for admissions, how can anyone blame them for the lower "quality" of students in minority races applying to their schools?

Some people literally feel that a dumber minority should have priority over a smarter white male. It's reverse discrimination I tell you.

i wish you weren't allowed to write (or the admissions people weren't allowed to read) what race you were on applications. it just shouldn't be a factor in the decision, IMO.

but in that case, there will be even less of certain minority groups (that already have small numbers as is) and even more of certain others.

here's a personal anecdote:

I had a couple black friends in high school. they were 2 out of about 5 of the entire black population. 1 of them was one smart mofo. 1500 SAT, 4.0+ gpa, etc. He applied to engineering to UCLA, UCB, USC, and some other private schools. He chose USC because they offered him full scholarship + $500 a month stipend.

The other guy was not as bright, but not an idiot. 1100 SAT, 3.0 gpa. He got accepted to UCLA, UCB. He also chose to go to a private school - he got a full ride to Emory.

The part where you fill out race is a completely optional question.

but if it is filled out, certain (many) schools do take it into consideration.

It's unlawful for California public universities to take it into consideration, that's why since prop 209 passed which banned the use of affirmative action, the number of non-whites and non-asians have decreased by a considerable amount.

didn't know that, but i'm personally in favor of a law like that and i wish more states had it. although i understand the purpose of affirmitive action, it really is reverse discrimination and should not be part of the application process.

notice how they used the term "underrepresented minority"? why not just minorities right? minorities is what matters, but they know very well they have to completely pretend asians do not exist so they can continue their little crusade. we are an inconvenient truth.

Because when you make up 40% of your school's population you're no longer a minority.

Not to sound like a communist...but this should really be about class. Its your familys wealth and the quality of your school, not the color of your skin, that should be considered here.

then schools like UCLA suffer since we can't get talented minority students. It's already happening at the graduate level. Fewer minority applicants are going to UCLA law for example.

Well, the overall purpose of affirmative action is to "level the playing field" in respect to developmental/cultural/societal access to various resources. If a particular group of people, minority or not, is not under-represented, then affirmative action shouldn't be applied to them.

When I was in college, the average for the school for accepted medical school applicants (seniors who had applied and gotten into a med school) was a 3.7 GPA and a 90th %ile MCAT score. The average for blacks was 3.1 GPA and 50%ile MCAT score (100% of applicants were accepted into medical school)

Do what you want with that information.

It's because schools liek UCLA are filled with Asians. Go figure. 40% Asians? Not even that bad. My high schoolw as close to 70% Asian, and by Asian I refer to mainly Taiwanese, Chinese, Korean, Japanese. Thus schools like these are filled with elitist rich Asian kids who study engineering, biology, chemistry, economics and business.

I don't see how UCLA can be scrutinized for this. The Asians I just mentioned have parents that push them insanely hard so they take prep classes for every class in high school and prep classes for every damn test. If we are top heavy in SAT and GPA, so what? Maybe it's time for the other races to step up and do the same. Until then, don't deprive us Asians of our right to a good education when we work our ASSES off. I hate it when I see idiots on campus whining about bringing affirmative action. REVERSE the minority drop? There's a reason Asians are not whining.

I personally fell it should be merit-based and NOT race-based. If you're a URM, you work just as hard as everyone else to compete to get into these schools.

Damn, I can possibly see the case for undergrads, but when you're going to med school to become a doctor and people's lives will be in your hands, it should be nothing less than pure credentials that gets you in..

because they got into harvard law.

it's the same at the undergrad level - minorities who are qualified to attend a top tier public school will get better benefits at a top tier private school. full rides, stipends, etc.

bullsh*t. we are what? 1% of the us population? we are about as "minority" as it gets. asians work damn hard to get into those schools, they don't get in because of some kind of tradition or old time racism type bullsh*t. but its hidden away, why? because its an inconvenient truth that a minority CAN succeed. and that goes against all the whining the other groups do about the system keeping them down.

Your whining is just as bad as when the "other" side does it.
