How big of difference: 512kb L2 -V- 1mb L2?

You should be more worried about clockspeed than the cache. It's not very noticeable.

1mb cache=5xx series prescott..

The prescott has several changes from northwood, it performs better in some things and worse in others at the same clock speed. Prescotts run hotter. They have more cache, but the cache is slower. They reach higher clockspeeds, but increased the pipeline lenght to do so. So overall, if I had a choice between at 3.4 northwood or 3.4 prescott..I would take a northwood any day.
