how big of an upgrade???

Here's info on the dell that I'm considering(only $529 w/ FP monitor)
AMD Athlon? 64 X2 Dual-Core 3800+
Genuine Windows Vista? Home Basic
1GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz- 2DIMMs
80GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) w/DataBurst Cache?
NVIDIA GeForce 6150 LE Integrated Graphics GPU

Here's what I currently have(manufactured by Sony):
Intel Pentium 4 2.4 GHz
Windows XP Home Edition
512 MB of RAM
80GB hard drive
Real 256 2D/3D graphics accelerator (32 MB of shared graphics memory)

huge. i went from the 2.4C to an opteron 170 and its blazing fast.

any chance of building your own...? or do you not need gaming performance (video card)?

I'd go w/ Vista Home Premium, it can be had for $120 OEM or so.

EDIT: I'd either make the memory 1 DIMM, or at least make sure the board can take 4DIMMS, that way you can up your memory down the road.
