How big of a power supply should I have?

This is the system that I helped my brother build for his upgrade:

AMD Athlon 64 2800+ (Newcastle)
MSI K8T Neo-FSR
Crucial 512 MB DDR400
ATi Radeon 9600XT

My brother currently has a 250 W power supply and I am worried that it is a little small. What would you recommend? I think 350 W would be good but I am not even sure if he needs to upgrade it. Thanks.

If you could also recommend not only the size but the manufacturer (I know little to nothing about power supplies) it would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

PS: (A newegg link would be nice as well 😀)

Good power supplies come from:

PC Power and Cooling (the best, but pricey), Antec, Vantec, Enermax, OCZ, Thermaltake, Fortron....

Antec I think has the best quality for the price.

I am unsure what brand my brother's power supply is, but I can practically guareentee that it is a very bad one. I am thinking a 350 W, I am still deciding what brand though, that is, if I need to upgrade at all.

try it with the 250watt psu. if the computer is unstable, then you will know what to do 😉

350 watts is the way to go (you have to think ahead of the game) it is a nice enough PSU that you can plug almost anything to it(Ok so you do not want to plug a 6800 ultra too it) still and all that is the way to go.

First let me say that I appreciate all of the replies, they are very heplful. And while on the subject of power supplies, I was wondering if you think I have a big enough one for MY system, which consists of the following:

Pentium 4 2.8 Ghz (Northwood) 800 FSB HT enb
ATi Radeon 9800 Pro 128 MB
1 GB (2x512 MB) Crucial DDR400 (Dual Channel)
MSI 865 Neo2 Motherboard

I don't know if you need to know anything else. I currently have an Apex Allied 350W Max (Model: AL-A350ATX) (http://www.newegg.com/app/view...17-154-012&depa=0). If I need to upgrade my power supply I would probably just give this one to my brother and it would solve both our problems. Thanks again.

THIS is what I am using. I got it before it came on the retail market. I am very happy with it. The product is sooooo quiet, and the customer service is excellent. Nice bunch of people, decent prices, great products.

what I have might be a bit more than you want or need, but they make a lot of different PSU.

🙂

All of the information is great, but what I really want to know is if I NEED to upgrade my power supply on the systems I listed above (in post #1, #11). Thanks, all of the info has been great.

I wouldn't really recomend running the A64 system on a 250w psu, epsecialy if you don't know what brand it is. In the last 2 months, I've had 3 of my friends systems die, because they were using underpowered or low quality PSU's. One was even running a 2.4ghz p4 on a PSU that didn't have the 4 pin 12v connector.

I'd suggest this cheaper Fortron because its cheaper and gotten better reviews.

350 watts of real power will be more than you need for either you are your brothers system.
All that said, the 250 watt should be a boat anchor or paperweight. That can seriously fry a mobo or HDD using that weenie psu🙂

If you wanna get a really good upgrade proof psu Fortron has a 530 watt thats rock solid but doesnt glow pretty for 83 bux shipped.

I'm debating between a 350W and a 400W for this system:

P4 2.8C 800MHz FSB HT enb
MSI 865PE Neo2
Crucial PC3200 DDR 1024 MB (2x512)
ATi Radeon 9800 Pro 128 MB

350W is about 33% cheaper as well so there is quite a price difference.
