* this is strictly about monitors that will be sitting on your desk, not one that'll be used in your living room

how big of a widescreen monitor is enough for you?

what do you use it for?

I like my 30", & i'll consider even bigger, as long as the resolution is also higher.

I'd say 24" is the limit before you start having to put some major distance between you and the desk.

As long as the hardware sort of keeps up with the requirements of the best games at any given resolution, the bigger the better. A few years ago, you needed 2 of the best just to run higher than 1920x1200, but now you can get by with an 8800 or 2900 at that res. If a higher standard arrives, and the graphics hardware are capable of running the current software at the new resolution, then we'll move on up!!!

im about to spring for a dell 2407WFP. its basically the perfect size for editing/gaming/whatever since its at 1920x1200. i dont think you'll need to update the monitor for a longggggggg time. besides, it has all these inputs (composite, component, s-video, 4 usb ports and even a card reader) in it so it makes it one of the best 24" panels out there.

hopefully i can still get it at dell for around $530ish after that AAA and preferred customer discounts...or just get it at costco.com.....

Thats why I bought my dell 2405fpw, great size, lots of features and inputs plus the card reader. I dont see myself having to upgrade for a long time.

My 8800 GTX is reaching its limit at 1680x1050 (20.1") in the latest games so a 24" would be too large.

I am going to get a 2407WFP an a 8800GTX maybe later this year. Even with a 24" you don't have to run everything at 1900x1200. (Although it will def look nice)

24" is what I have and I think this is the absolute sweet spot for gaming. 37" 1080P monitor might be ok, but I dont like the fact that you're giving up a little resolution and that you have to sit so far back in order for the pixels not to look like houses.

I like 24" I personally like sitting up close. ~2ft or less. If I got a bigger monitor I would have to sit further back which isn't as enjoyable for me.

For those who want a computer monitor, not a TV, 24-inch is the smallest desktop size that allows for native display of HD video. It used to be 23-inch, but they are almost all gone by now.

24-inch is pretty much foreseeable-future-proof and prices in that category are almost there

I voted for 30" personally (and I don't have one yet. lol) but like others say, I think 24" is a sweet spot. Big enough resolution to view two full-size documents side by side, and it's closest to the 1080P which many of the console games will support for the coming years. I am ready to purchase a 30"er, but I can't make up my mind because I keep hearing that a new generation LCD is coming out soon. Unlike other parts, monitors are a long-term investment for me (and probably for many others) so waiting will be worthwhile if something better is coming along in near future.

Talking about it, does anyone have any news regarding upcoming 24~30" monitors?

I voted for >30" just because bigger is better :p. No but seriously if i didn't have my 24" right now I would probably buy the 37" westy thats on sale right now.

lopri, Dell already has the 30" -HC version out. the 24" and 27" variants haven't been released yet. I would get that if you can swing it

My Dell 3007WFP is sharp as a tack; I sit about 2 feet away and its really efficient for doing financial modeling or editing any multiple sets of documents. Its not really that big at all, you get a lot more vertical space to play with (1600 pixels) compared to the 24 inch LCD at 1200 pixels in vertical height.

40 degree viewing angle is too big for gaming imo.

30-25 would be good though. Figure out how far away it will be and go from there :D

Needs more 20". 20" has the same res as 22" but with a tighter pixel pitch. It's what I use and it's about perfect. I could probably handle 24" but not much beyond that. Too much neck turning at that point. :D
