I have an old PC with 32mb ram and a 850mb drive. Its also got a 2gb slave drive. I would set the 2gb as a master but the drives are so old. I dont know the jumpers.

I looked on microsoft's website and it says i need 2 gigs. Do i really need 2 gigs ?

Professional? Server? Yah, depending on which, without any additional programs and applications, I would set aside at least 1.3GB

What are you going to use it for? 1/4 through the boot up and your 32MB of RAM is already gone, so it will be deadly slow with the hard drive(s) performing functions the memory should be.

No offence, but your hardware sounds more suited to a Linux or Unix home project!

I've run Win2k on a Pentium class system with similar specs, and its doable, but as the last person mentioned, deadly slow. Someone recently told me that I can move the Windows 2000 swap file (pagefile.sys) to a lesser used drive to increase performance. I think your 830MB drive would be perfectly suited for this.

I just want to keep some pictures and files on it. So a file server i guess. I was going to install PC anywhere on it maybe. Since i dont have a VPN router to use Nixrosofts remote asstiance

A base Win2k Pro install uses around 950MB. (size really depends on how much RAM you have, the more RAM you have the bigger your page file will be.)

Win2k will be horribly slow when loading applications with only 32MB of RAM. (the OS will be swapping stuff from memory to disk about 80% of the time) Once the app gets loaded it should OK however.

I believe 650mb is the BARE minimum you can have, while M$ recommends 2GB. This is for WIN2kPRO.

What you can do is install Win2000 onto the 2GB, even if it is slave. It will install some files on the 850MB Master, but those are only a few MB's at the most. Then you can do what AShadeOfClear said and move the swap file over to the 850MB. I run Win2000 on a little 4GB and after installing it I have like 3.1GB free so do the math. And yes, that will run slow as all hell :D

i'd definately go with linux on that box.
you can still do file serving on linux machines.
