How big of a graphics performance increase can one expect from a 128MB AGP 5900Ultra to 512MB X1650Pro?

Where can one find a 7600 series with DDR3 for less then $70? Lowest price DDR3 card costs $99.99 after rebate at the egg. Plus he would have to fork out the additional funds just to get it shipped, close to $140 bringing cost after rebate to greater then $100.

Not much, really . . .

The X1650Pro and 7600GS are at best 70-80% upgrade.***

For an extra ten bucks (after rebate) you could try the XFX PVT73AUDF3 GeForce 7600GT 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 AGP 4X/8X - probably another 50% faster than the X1650Pro and 7600GS.

If he can afford just a tiny bit more, then definitely go with this card instead!

It's also a x1650pro but with 256MB of ddr3 running at 1300MHz instead of the 512MB ddr2 800MHz card you linked to above.

A much faster card and not much more price-wise.

OK, folks, from the top on this:

1. A seriously major part of newer games' graphics is relying on shaders for effects. The FXes do not have the prescribed version of Pixel Shader 2, and as a result are extremely slow in games such as Oblivion (about as bad as the 6200A for most of them).

2. Therefore, for those, even an X1300 Pro would be a noticeable improvement.

3. VRAM quantity beyond 256 MB does not have a direct effect on graphics performance, and a Mid-Level and lower video card with only a 128-bit memory bandwidth (like the X1650 and the geforce 7600) will max out at 256 MBs of usable VRAM. Any more than that is simply a marketing Scam.

4. Quite often this particular scam involves cheaper, slower VRAM, to provide the seller with a still larger margin of deceit while bamboozling the newbies.

Yeah, we can argue, but what is 2nd gen Lithuanian? I also like that : 'Wicked The Lithuanian Flash'

It means my grandparents entered the USA through Ellis Island (Statue of Liberty) in 1906 and my pappy (may he RIP) was Albinas Bernotas (not the poet!)

To the OP: Sorry about the hijack - get the 7600gt!

You know, spending money for that outdated SH*T isn't good, buy X1950GT for $110 A/M-r
or wait in August releasing Dx10 cards like HD 2600PRO-XT and then make your decision,
prices also will be lower.

The GeForce FX supports SM2.0 and SM2.0a and Oblivion supports SM2.0, SM2.0b and SM3.0, the FX limitation rely more in the deficiencies in the shader architecture like register scheduling and pressure etc. The VRAM amount in low or midrange cards doesn't have nothing to do with the BUS Width, the amount of memory will only benefit the card if the GPU is powerful enough to take advantage of it in high resolutions, the X800XL 256MB and 512MB didn't show any differences except in ultra high resolutions with anti aliasing enabled, even the 8800GTS 320 is as fast as the 640MB except in high resolutions with anti aliasing were the frame buffer comes into play. In Mid and low range of cards, higher amounts of RAM will not help cause at high resolutions, the card will be GPU bound. The Bus Width is important, but look at the case, the 128-Bit BUS of the 7600GT can run almost as fast as the X800 XT that is a 256-Bit card, higher Bus Width and amount of VRAM are only useful at high resolutions with lots of anti aliasing when not GPU limited.

hmmm now that I think about it, in DX9 games the X1650 card would be miles faster than what the older 5900 could ever hope to achieve.

Users who have posted in this thread have forgotten the key thing about the Geforce FX series...they couldn't run DX9 code fast enougth to even be competitive with what ATI had on offer when the Geforce FX was first released.

IIRC the top of the line 5950Ultra was still slower than the older 9700 and 9700PRO in DX9 games despite being produced to compete with the considerably faster 9800XT.

I would say that the upgrade to the X1650Pro is worth it, but you might want to wait a little bit, the ATI HD2x00 series are coming to AGP and while their performance isn't competitive with the higher end AGP cards (X1950 series, 7800/7900GS) they will perform better than the X1650 series.

Oh man, I miss the days of Rollo. He would probably have the most "ingenious" rebuttals for why 5800 Ultra was a great card :) Nostalgic reads. For P4 3.2ghz, I'd probably go for X1900GT/Pro as the last upgrade before sending that system to the grave. For $110-120 it seems like a reasonable uprade to prolong the life of a system by 1 year.

I agree with Russian, I think you meant X1950GT, correct?. It's a very good card which can likely be clocked up to Pro speeds.....
