EDIT: Then again, I don't own my place either. I imagine if I paid for it, I would know.

Even if you are renting, you should know your sq footage as you are paying for it.

OP should have excluded those living at home still in this though.

1788 sq ft under air. Bought last year so I am paying way too much for it, but I needed more space.

It's a detached home with separate garage and a decent yard though.

I just moved into a 700 sq ft apartment in central jersey...

1 bedroom, bath, kitchen, and living room. it's big enough for me, though I wish I could carve up the bedroom into more space for the living room + bathroom.

I wouldn't mind a small bedroom, since ideally, all my activities within the bedroom would be limited to taking place on the bed, enough room to get dressed in. but in my current location, I had to put my computer/desk and bookcases in the bedroom so that there's room in the living room to hang out in with my friends (couch, loveseat, 2 arm chairs). and my bathroom is like a closet. I hate being in there... I pretty much brush my teeth, shower, and gtfo. I don't use the toilet unless I absolutely have to. I've got to do like contortions :p

Sounds like there are some rich people here on AT.

I'm in a 915ft² apartment. When I do buy a house, it will probably be about the same size as this apartment.

btw, what does 'under air' mean?

You talking about your parent's house? Most homes at least in the SE states specify 'under air' sq footage to denote the living areas as opposed to porches, garages, external enclosures that add to total sq footage.

No, my parent's house is about 2400 sq feet, also in coastal southern california. Thanks re explanation, I had never heard that term before, or at least noticed it when I was buying this house. It always seemed to be understood that sq ft did not include those things when the space was quoted.

didn't think basements counted in the sq footage of a house?

Our house is a new construction split foyer. The basement is completely finished with carpet, outlets, Cat6 jacks, coax, HVAC, insulation, a full bathroom, the whole 9 yards. Maybe it's different in other states, but a finished and inspected basement in SD does count towards total square footage.

Holy Shit... Another South Dakotan. I thought I was the only one here (living in this state that is).

2100sf home including finished basement. From what I understand of my recent home buying experience. Here at least, you can only include the basement square footage if you have an egress window.

I have the same size bed as the previous poster. I don't look at anything that has a room smaller than 11x13 or 143 sq ft.
