Yo ahfung - tell me about that Highpoint 368 - is this an on-board controller, or one you buy separately, like the Promise? If it is separate, is it any good?

WD Expert 18gb.

Fun guy:

Being ATA66 RAID controller, HPT368 is phrased out now. Highpoint has HPT370 which is ATA100 RAID, at the same price as HPT368. Highpoint doesn't make its own external IDE controllers. It only supplies the chips to brandnames like IWill and Abit.

Back to the topic, HPT368 has both onboard and external version. Mine one is onboard, integrated into my Epox BX7+. Seperate is definitely better than onboard. In case of hardware screwup, u can still move the damned card around. Not possible to do with onboard one, because mobo makers hardwire it to one of the PCI slot thus they will share the same IRQ anyway.

Yet I suggest you not to buy Highpoint one even though I'm using, because not too happy with it. system is slow as snail (skippy cursor movement and MP3 playback) during heavy writing access. Fired them an email days ago but still receive no reply. 🙁

Proof positive that hard drive sizes are excessive.

And that some people have a pseudo-Freudian "hard drive envy" ... :Q
