The same is not true of public roads. It's when you hit something solid, like a wall or a jersey barrrier, that you get killed. Crashes at such speeds are not very common, since you'll be going in a straight line. Most crashes will happen in corners, at lower speeds.
Good leathers hold up remarkably well, and they have body armor. You wouldn't want to fall off a bike at any speed if you were wearing some jacket that you got at Wilson's>>
